Fried Green Tomatoes
Enjoy this southern classic recipe for fried green tomatoes:
Ingredients:
- 4 green tomatoes, medium-sized
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
* ½ cup cornmeal (or bread crumbs)
- ¼ cup buttermilk
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
1/2 t paprika (optional)
½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
3-4 cups vegetable oil or peanut oil for frying
Method:
1. Prepare the Tomatoes:
- Slice the green tomatoes into ¼-inch slices
– Put them on a paper towel, salt lightly on both sides and let sit for 10 minutes to release the moisture.
2. Prepare the Coatings:
– 1 Bowl flour with a pinch of salt, pepper, paprika and garlic powder (optional)
In another bowl whisk the buttermilk, milk and egg.
– In another bowl, combine the cornmeal (or breadcrumbs) with 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper.
3. Dredge the Tomatoes:
Each slice goes in the seasoned flour first, gently remove excess.
Coat tomato slice well, on both sides in milk/egg mixture.
At last, cover the cut in the cornmeal or breadcrumbs, squeezing gently so they stick.
4. Fry the Tomatoes:
•Add 1/4-inch of oil to a large skillet set over medium heat. The oil temperature should be around 350°F (175°C).
In batches, fry the coated tomato slices, being careful not to crowd the pan. Propel once again into the oil and broil for 2-3 minutes or until fresh on all sides.
Next, transfer the fried tomatoes to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
5. Serve:
Method- Serve hot with some ranch, remoulade, or a good spicy aioli.
